Chapter 10

Violet walked up to the gallery, which had light spilling out onto the darkened path. She could hear a buzz of voices spilling out of the door and she picked up her pace. When she walked into the brightly lit room she let her eyes scan the walls. At first all she saw were pictures of John’s ranch, but she quickly realized they weren’t just any pictures, they were hers.

Violet walked further into the room and span around to take them all in. She couldn’t hide the confusion, which had found its way to her face. She didn’t understand what was happening. Her editor hadn’t asked whether she could use her photographs like that. She looked around the room to try and find the person who was in charge of the event, but they stopped looking when they saw John, standing at the other side of the room.

Without thinking, Violet headed over to John, who was talking to somebody in an animated way and pointing to the photograph behind him. “May I steal John away for a moment?” Violet asked the man, who was in the animated conversation.

“Oh yes, don’t worry about me.” The man said cheerfully, as he turned and walked towards the next picture.

“Hi.” Violet said, as everything else fell out of her mind.

“Hey.” John said smiling.

“Do you know what’s going on here?” Violet asked, as a thousand other questions swam around in her mind.

“I do.” John said with a smile. He reached out and put his arm around Violet’s waist. Violet watched, as he moved closer to her, but she stepped away from.

“Could you explain?” She asked, as she avoided his gaze. He couldn’t just drop her the way that he did and then expect to treat her, as though the week of silence hadn’t happened. Plus, she couldn’t risk her editor hearing about them being close in public.

“This is my gallery, I thought if you saw your pictures on the walls, then you might want to come and work here.” John said, as he closed the space, which Violet had put between them.

“What?” Violet asked, as though she hadn’t understood.

“This gallery is yours to do what you like with.” He said in a husky whisper.

Violet could feel a smile spreading across her face. “Are you serious?” She asked in childlike excitement.

“Incredibly so.” John said, as he placed his hand around her waist. “There is one condition though.” He said, as he pulled her into him.

“Oh?” Violet asked, as she eyed him suspiciously.

“Well, I don’t want my gallery being your second priority, so you would have to quit the job that you are in now…” John said.

“Done.” Violet said with a grin. She looked around the huge room, which had suddenly become hers. She could already see the potential the room held and the things, which she would be able to do with it. This was her dream and she could see it in reality. “Can I ask you something though?” Violet said, as her eyes didn’t leave their scan of the room.
